5 Benefits of Babywearing Multiples

When you find out you’re expecting twins, triples, or beyond, it can be both exciting and terrifying. Just when you probably got used to the idea of becoming a parent to one child, you now have a whole new set of “what-if’s” and fears as you try to think about parenting more than one at a time. The last thing you are probably thinking about is babywearing multiples

You will likely have to buy two of each must-have baby items on your list: two car seats, two cribs, two layette sets, but if you choose correctly, you’ll only need one baby carrier when your babies are young.

Babywearing has many benefits for parents and baby and it’s a practice many parents today are embracing because of these benefits. If you’re expecting multiples, you may not realize that wearing both your babies at the same time is possible, but it is!

There are added benefits for your and your babies when you practice tandem babywearing that can aid the health of your children and tame the chaos of your very busy day.

1. Skin-to-skin contact through Babywearing is good for smaller babies

According to Baby Center, the average twin baby is nearly two pounds smaller than a full-term singleton and there’s an even larger weight gap when you look at triples and beyond. With smaller babies, regulating temperature can be challenging and that’s where skin-to-skin comes in. Studies show that smaller babies breathe better and can gain weight easier when they’re placed skin-to-skin often and with twins, this is a huge benefit of babywearing.

2.Through Babywearing Multiples, you can get your babies to sleep on the same schedule

Getting any sort of sleep routine for babies is not the easiest thing and when you’re attempting to get two babies on the same schedule – the task can seem even more daunting. Through babywearing your twins at the same time, you can ease them into sleep, which wearing our babies often does, and encourage your children to nap at the same time.

3. You can practice tandem nursing

If you’re nursing your multiples, it can feel like all you do is feed them around the clock. Getting them on the same schedule and practicing your tandem nursing (breastfeeding both babies at the same time), can be done with babywearing. There are many wraps and slings available that makes it easier for you to hold one or both of your babies while nursing so it’s not as challenging as it may seem.

4. You’ll have both hands free

Having multiples means your hand will be busier at times than parents with a single baby so the luxury of having both hands free is not lost on you. By babywearing, you’ll be able to do everyday things with both hands: eating a meal, doing chores around the house, and shopping.

5. You don’t need to double up

The cost of raising babies and all the products that make life easier can really add up. With multiples and the need to get double of almost everything, saving money can make a real difference. With babywearing your multiples, you only need to buy one wrap or sling that you can use for both babies at the same time, which is a huge benefit.
